The Spiritual Life of the Minister

Dr Stuart Devenish, February 12-18, 2018.This subject explores the depth-dimensions of the leader's relationship with God, identifying it as the "engine room" of Christian ministry. But ministers often leave their spiritual life "on hold", as they attend to the needs of others before themselves. This subject draws from biblical, theological, biographical and existential resources to re-frame the spiritual life of the ministry-leader, as the cornerstone of their life and ministry. The Minister/pastor/priest is both model and spiritual impresario – whose actions, words and life-direction exemplifes the substance of the Christian gospel both inside and outside the Church. What is needed is a healthy, sustainable, growing and transformative "living centre" of the Christian life on display for all to see.

Dr Stuart Devenish is Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of MTC, Tabor College. He has a 30+ years of experience as a Pastor, Missionary and Theological Educator. He has a passion for discipleship, having worked at the coalface as well as teaching and writing in the field. This is a hands-on course not to be missed.

Professor Soong Chan Rah

Integrative Leadership in Complex and Contested Environments

Prof Soong Chan Rah, June 25-29, 2018.Our urban environments are increasingly complex and contested spaces. Knowing how to negotiate these spaces represents a growing challenge to pastoral leaders who want to engage their communities with the therapeutic resources contained in the gospel of Christ. Effective strategies for mission and ministry need to be integrative rather than conflictual. Prof Soong Chan Rah (North Park University, Chicago) has expertise in the application of the resources of the Christian faith into situations where different ethnicities, ideologies, religions and cultural values intersect. Soong Chan will present a Masterclass in building social capital, community development and building religious identity for Christians in our rapidly changing social, religious and technological world-environment.

Dr Bernie Power

Ministering to Your Muslim Neighbour

Dr Bernie Power, October 22 (Monday), 2018.Dr Bernie Power is a specialist in Christian-Muslim relations, having lived in the Middle East for 30+ years. This Workshop is a not-to-be missed 1-day event for EVERYONE interested in understanding Islam, and ministering to their Muslim neighbours. While Muslims make up only 2.5% of the Australian population, they are managing to make their presence felt in every sector of Australian society. Muslim people are religiously 'open', and are often willing to engage in discussions about religious topics – including the person of Jesus Christ. Christians have a God-given opportunity to connect positively with their Muslim neighbours.

Bernie's recent publications are Understanding Jesus and Mohammed (Acorn, 2016), and William Carey, 2016). He has significant insight into the Q'uran and Islamic teachings and their wide-ranging impact on the world today. He is a Christian leader whose capacity to engage with Islamic scriptures, people, teachings and social impact is 2nd to none in Australia.

NB: this Workshop is not-for-credit; but if there is enough interest, we will bring him back for a for-credit Intensive in 2019ff.
