Professional Outcomes

The CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services qualification is nationally recognised, and provides a broad perspective on the community services sector, focusing on a person-centred approach to client care. The minimum 120-150 hour work placement allows students the opportunity to work with supervision in community rehabilitation, outreach work, mental health, youth and aged care settings.

Potential pathways include: Certificate IV in Mental Health, Certificate IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care, Certificate IV in Youth Work, Diploma of Youth Work and Diploma of Counselling.

  • Complete a minimum work requirement of 120-150 hours
  • Apply for a DCSI Employment screening check
  • Complete the Respond to Abuse and Neglect – Education Care (RAN-EC) training

Work Placement

Students are encouraged to find their own Work Placement according to their interests and intended career paths. Over the duration of the Work Based Placement (WBP) the student’s role is that of support worker. In that capacity the student will be expected to demonstrate their ability to perform specific tasks with each client according to the organisation’s service delivery protocols. The WBP mentor will provide additional training regarding the organisation’s policy and procedures that guide the work that is done. The student will work in consultation with their mentor regarding any actions that are taken for or with clients. The way the students support work is structured will be guided by the host organisation mentor in order to meet organisation requirements. Therefore, this aspect of the WBP is not prescriptive.

SACE

Students completing the CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services may be awarded between 80-85 Stage 2 SACE points if undertaking this full qualification for SACE purposes, dependent on electives chosen. For students wanting to use this towards an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR), only 20 of these points will be used (provided the student has successful completion of the certificate). For students wishing to gain entrance into a higher qualification needing an ATAR, contact SATAC or the provider directly for further course information.

Skill sets are not qualifications. They are groupings of units of competency which are combined to provide a clearly defined statement of the skills and knowledge required by an individual to meet industry needs or a licensing or regulatory requirement.

The Training Package Development Handbook defines Skill Sets as 'single units of competency, or combinations of units of competency from an endorsed training package, which link to a licence or regulatory requirement, or defined industry need'. Skill Sets identified and developed within training packages are formally recognised on a statement of attainment.

What do I need for entry?

Students must meet the minimum language, literacy and numeracy standards

Recognition of prior learning / credit transfer
If you can provide evidence of competency for some of the units, you may not have to undertake those units.
In simple terms, RPL means that if you have not already undertaken the unit or its equivalent, but have the required knowledge and skills to demonstrate competency for the unit, you won’t have to study the unit.
Credit transfer is where you have a Statement of Attainment or a qualification which clearly states you have demonstrated competency in those units or their equivalent.

Additional Information

Homework

As with most adult study, students will be required to complete pre-course reading and related activities prior to attending their weekly classes. In addition, it is expected that students will undertake a certain amount of homework such as reading, research, completing written assignments, etc. During enrolment in this course, students are advised that they can expect an average of 20 hours self-directed study or homework per week.
