About This Course

The Graduate Certificate in Biblical Preaching offers an opportunity to explore how to interpret key sections of the Bible (Pentateuch, Prophets, Synoptic Gospel, Romans – students choose two of these) in significant depth.

The Graduate Certificate is targeted at pastors and others who preach regularly and would like to develop this side of their ministry. The graduate certificate addresses the needs of those preachers who may have completed introductory study on the Bible but have never explored the dynamics of and approaches to biblical preaching in a focused way. It also allows these preachers to explore sections of the biblical text that they may feel less confident interpreting and preaching.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Explain major themes and features of key sections of the biblical text
  • Evaluate various styles of biblical preaching, drawing on a specialised knowledge of homiletics
  • Investigate contemporary issues involved in the study and analysis of key texts and their implications for interpretation
  • Responsibly exegete key biblical texts in dialogue with contemporary scholarship and creatively apply these texts to their own contexts
  • Preach a biblically based sermon that evidences sound exegesis, rhetorical proficiency, and creativity
  • Critically reflect on their personal theology and practice of preaching
